The Sinking City 2 save game location, backup and restore

One-line answer — Checked August 26, 2026: Frogwares confirms %LOCALAPPDATA%\TSC2 as the Windows local game root but does not publish a save-only subfolder, so exit the game and Steam, then copy the entire TSC2 folder.

Officially confirmed Windows backup location

Paste this folder path into Windows Run or File Explorer:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\TSC2

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Paste the path exactly as shown, then press Enter.
  3. Copy the whole TSC2 folder. Do not move it and do not select only files that look recently modified.

If the folder is absent: do not substitute the older game's TSCGame directory. Confirm that the released game has created local data, then use Frogwares Support if the confirmed TSC2 root is still missing.

Back up the confirmed local root without changing it

  1. Finish the current session: Exit the game, then let Steam finish syncing until the Library no longer shows an upload or out-of-sync state.
  2. Stop file and Cloud activity: Exit Steam completely before touching the local-data folder. Closing only the game is not the same as exiting the Steam client.
  3. Open the confirmed local root: Press Windows + R, paste %LOCALAPPDATA%\TSC2, and press Enter. Frogwares has not published a narrower save-only path, so use the whole confirmed folder.
  4. Copy, never move: Copy the folder; do not move it. Put the copy outside the TSC2 directory, preferably on another drive or another backup destination.
  5. Timestamp and verify the copy: Name it TSC2-full-YYYY-MM-DD-HHMM, then open the copy and compare its file count and size with the source before relying on it.

Keep at least one older generation. A freshly copied damaged state is not a substitute for a known-good backup from before the problem. Because this is a full-root copy, it may contain additional local or diagnostic data. Frogwares' cited FAQ does not inventory each file type inside it.

Useful backup checkpoints

Test a full-root restore with a reversible rollback

This is a best-effort test, not a guaranteed save recovery: the official source confirms the local-data root but not a complete save-file inventory. Preserve both the current state and the backup before testing.

  1. In Steam, Turn off Steam Cloud for this game temporarily under the game's Properties, then exit the game and Steam completely.
  2. Open %LOCALAPPDATA%. Rename the current TSC2 folder to TSC2-current-YYYY-MM-DD-HHMM. Do not delete it.
  3. Duplicate the backup you want to test; never work from your only backup. Copy that duplicate into %LOCALAPPDATA% and name the copied folder TSC2.
  4. Start Steam with Cloud still off. Launch the game, verify the Continue screen and load the save. Do not treat a visible slot as proof until it loads correctly.
  5. Exit the game and let Steam close. Keep the pre-restore folder until the restored progress has been played and backed up again.
  6. Re-enable Steam Cloud only when you know which copy is correct. If a conflict appears, use the decision guide below instead of choosing by reflex.

Steam Cloud conflict: decide before syncing

Steam's official store confirms Cloud support, while Valve explains that matching files sync before and after sessions. A Cloud copy is useful redundancy, but it is not a replacement for a dated local backup that you control.

Choose by the last session you can verify, not by “Cloud” or “local” alone
What you knowSafest next action
Known-good local progressPreserve the local folder first. If the client asks which version to keep, select the verified local session—not merely whichever label looks newer.
Known-good Cloud progressPreserve the current local folder anyway, then select the Cloud session only if it matches the last session on the other Windows PC.
Unsure or the timestamps look wrongDo not launch the game into a new write. Back up local files and download the Cloud copy before choosing (Steam sign-in required). Preserve both sets; do not place downloaded files into an unverified subfolder.

Roll back a failed restore

Keep Cloud off and exit the game and Steam. Rename the failed test folder, then restore the untouched pre-restore folder as TSC2. Load it before removing anything. Because the original and backup were copied or renamed—not moved away or overwritten—you retain both recovery directions.

What else the full-root backup contains

A full-root backup may contain additional local or diagnostic data; Frogwares' cited FAQ does not itemize it. The official FAQ may request the same full local folder for a crash report, together with DxDiag and a screenshot or video. Send an archive through the official support ticket only when requested; do not post the whole local folder publicly.

This guide covers the Windows Steam build only. The evidence does not establish PC-to-console or cross-platform migration, and it does not authorize replacing PlayStation or Xbox platform-managed data with Windows files.

Save game location and backup FAQ

Where is The Sinking City 2 save game location on Windows?

Frogwares confirms the Windows local game root at %LOCALAPPDATA%\TSC2. It does not currently publish a narrower save-only subfolder for The Sinking City 2. The full root is therefore the most conservative first-party-documented copy target, but that source does not prove it contains every progress file or guarantee a successful restore.

Does The Sinking City 2 support Steam Cloud?

Yes. The official Steam store lists Steam Cloud. Valve's Steamworks documentation says matching Cloud files synchronize before and after sessions, so wait for sync to finish before exiting Steam and making a manual copy.

How do I restore a backup without losing my current saves?

Treat a full-root restore as a best-effort test, not a guaranteed save recovery. Temporarily disable this game's Steam Cloud, exit Steam, rename the current TSC2 folder as a timestamped pre-restore copy, and copy—not move—your chosen full-root backup into place. Test it with Cloud still off before re-enabling sync.

Can I move these saves to PlayStation, Xbox or another platform?

This evidence establishes the Windows Steam path only. It does not establish PC-to-console or cross-platform migration, so do not overwrite platform-managed storage with these files.

Are the save files the same files Frogwares requests for a crash report?

Frogwares may request an archived copy of the same full local folder, %LOCALAPPDATA%\TSC2, along with DxDiag and a screenshot or video. The root may contain additional local or diagnostic data, so send it only through Frogwares Support when requested.

Primary sources: the pinned Team Frogwares FAQ for the TSC2 local root and crash-report boundary, the official Steam store for this game's Cloud feature, and Valve's Steam Cloud documentation for session sync behavior. Frogwares has not published a narrower, save-only TSC2 path, so no third-party subfolder is used here. Checked August 26, 2026.
